Could Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard follow the lead of Nets All-Star point guard Deron Williams and head overseas if the NBA lockout lingers into the regular season? It sure sounds that way.
Howard said over the weekend that he would consider playing in China or Europe if the NBA lockout doesn’t end. Howard, a five-time All-Star who led Orlando to the NBA finals in 2009, stopped short of saying he’s in contract discussions with teams overseas.
“I’m not at liberty to talk about it,” he said, “but there’s a huge possibility about me going to China or me going overseas to play basketball.”
Howard also said: “If I decide to go overseas, the main thing is for me to continue to get better, not to do the things that I normally do, but do better at the things I’m not good at. So I can use that talent to go overseas, working on my skills and staying in great shape.”
Howard enjoys rock-star status in China, perhaps ranking behind only Yao Ming and Kobe Bryant in popularity. He has gone on several tours for his shoe company in China, and was part of the U.S.’ gold-medal-winning team in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Stephon Marbury played in the Chinese Basketball Association and Bonzi Wells averaged more than 40 points in the CBA. Howard would just totally dominate.
Howard’s contract with the Magic runs through the 2012-13 season, but he can terminate the contract one year early and become a free agent next summer. And Howard has already said he would do that. The Magic have said they aren’t trading Howard even though the strong possibility exists that he walks away next season and the team gets nothing – just like what happened in the late 1990s with Shaquille O’Neal.
